A new era of mechanized seed production is imminent

Abstract: the annual planting area of hybrid rice in China is about 16million hectares, the annual demand for commercial hybrid rice seeds is about 240million kg, and the seed production area is about 150000 hectares. However, the existing technology mainly calculates the arithmetic mean value for "box seed production", which cannot realize mixed sowing and mixed harvest, resulting in serious dependence on the application method of artificial constant stress pressure testing machine, which hinders the rapid development of this industry

Cao Mengliang, a researcher of the center, took the lead in proposing the strategy of "linkage" of the third generation hybrid rice breeding technology to project female sterile restorer lines to solve the problem of mechanized seed production. After six years of research, the team introduced three gene expression cassettes, including rice female fertile gene, pollen inactivation gene and fluorescent screening marker gene, into female sterile rice, and heterozygous transgenic rice was self bred. After self pollination and seed setting, homozygous female sterile rice can be obtained through photoelectric sorting, which can be used as restorer line for mechanized seed production of hybrid rice. The other part of the hybrid seeds carrying transgenes can continue to be used for female sterile rice reproduction. Therefore, the technical problem of female sterile rice reproduction is effectively solved, and hybrid rice seed production, mixed sowing and mixed harvest can be realized. "In terms of methods, transgenic technology 'transfer' is used, but the final output is non transgenic hybrid rice seeds." Cao Mengliang said

it is understood that the current mainstream technology of hybrid rice breeding in China is the first and second generation technology proposed by Academician Yuan Longping's team. In 2011, Yuan Longping led the research on the breeding technology of the third generation hybrid rice and obtained the hybrid rice breeding technology using genetic engineering male sterile lines as genetic tools. This technology is simpler and easier to operate than the previous two generations

for this new achievement, Yuan Longping and the specific users of the expert group need to customize the evaluation according to their own use situation.
